People’s District

Community Development, Storytelling, Strategy

“Channeling Howard Zinn, Washington photographer Danny Harris started People’s District, a blog dedicated to cataloging the lives of residents inside the Beltway, from former convicts to a Ben Franklin impersonator to officeholders.”

National Journal Magazine

Overview

In July 2009, Danny Harris launched Washington D.C.’s largest and most ambitious non institutional-based oral history project. Over three years, Harris traveled across all 120+ city neighborhoods piecing together a “people’s history” of the District in the words of the city’s diverse residents. After conducting over 2,000 interviews and posting most of them to his blog, People’s District, the Washington Post called Harris “a modern-day Studs Terkel.”

Role

Danny Harris, a former terrorist financing analyst at the Treasury, launched People’s District as a way to meet his neighbors. He grew the blog into one of the largest and most influential Washington, D.C. websites, attracting 300,000 monthly unique views and building a repository of community stories and a platform for community engagement. His site served as the inspiration for 12 similar sites around the world, and he has leveraged his experience into speaking and consulting work around the world.
